Social Media Marketing Spend to Hit $3.1 Billion by 2014

We already knew that social media marketing budgets were on the rise, but now we know by how much. Forrester Research is out with their Interactive Marketing Forecast for the next five years, and estimates social media marketing to grow at an annual rate of 34 percent – faster than any other form of online marketing and double the average growth rate of 17 percent for all online mediums.

Of course, social media is starting from a smaller base. Forrester estimates that $716 million will be spent on the medium this year, growing to $3.1 billion in 2014. At that point, social media will be a bigger marketing channel than both email and mobile, but still just a fraction of the size of search or display advertising ($31.6B and $16.9B, respectively).

Not surprisingly, some of this growth comes at the expense of offline advertising. Forrester estimates that online advertising will grow from 12 percent of total marketing spend this year to 21 percent by 2014, meaning that offline ad spend will fall. In fact, Forrester concludes that “overall advertising budgets will decline,” meaning efficiencies are being had by shifting money to the Web.

In any event, it’s hard to argue that the numbers don’t paint a fairly rosy picture for the future of social media marketing. At Mashable, we’ve been covering an influx of innovative social media campaigns lately – check out a few of them:

Social media has overtaken pornography as the number 1 online activity, according to Hitwise info. Facebook added a hundred million users in less than a year to top the two hundred million user mark. If Facebook were a country, it would overtake Indonesia as the 4th biggest country in the world by September at this pace.
Social media’s expansion is now being helped by the Baby Boomer generation. The quickest growing segment on Facebook is made from females age fifty five to 65 as they attempt and better connect to better hook up and grandchildren. Heck, even the Pope has joined Facebook , launching a social media connection site.
With things moving so fast, how can corporations and marketers stand any chance at keeping up with it all? First, admit that you can not keep up.

In today’s society when an individual mentions the word “phishing” most people think someone is trying to steal their identity. But that is not the case in New Orleans, LA. They are actually refering to fishing as a relaxing hobby. In the past people that don’t have a boat and want to go fishing picked up the phone book and flipped until they found Fishing Guides but not today.

Today we open our web browser and go to Google. Then we type in a phrase such as New Orleans Fishing and see who the top Fishing Guide is. Well until recently Captain Scott Poche of www.lafittefishing.com was not on that first page of Google. Scott’s business was not the same as it was before hurricane Katrina. So, Scott contacted us at Accelerank to inquire about having his website optimized in Google searches.
